The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles

August 24, 2025 by Sheila | A B & Me Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for something fun, affordable, and uniquely Los Angeles to do with your teens, The Last Bookstore should be at the top of your list. This iconic downtown LA bookstore isn’t just a place to buy books — it’s an experience filled with art, history, and plenty of Instagram-worthy moments.

A Little Background

Located in a historic bank building in downtown Los Angeles, The Last Bookstore opened in 2005 and has grown into a literary landmark. Inside, you’ll find over 250,000 new and used books, vinyl records, rare editions, and art installations. The name comes from the founder’s tongue-in-cheek thought that, in the age of e-books, this might be “the last” big brick-and-mortar bookstore.

Fun fact: Some of the books are displayed in the building’s original bank vault — and yes, you can walk inside for a closer look.

Our Visit

During a school break, we wanted something close to home that wouldn’t cost a lot. My teen—an avid reader—had been curious about The Last Bookstore for months, so we finally made the trip.

After a quick bag inspection at the entrance, we stepped into a book lover’s paradise. The first floor is a maze of shelves filled with everything from classic literature and YA novels to coffee table books and cookbooks. My teen headed straight for the young adult section, while I browsed through vintage magazines and photography books.

Upstairs, we discovered the famous book tunnel, whimsical wall displays, and cozy reading nooks. There are also small artist studios and a rare book collection to explore.

When we finished browsing, we walked a few blocks to Grand Central Market for snacks — the perfect pairing for an afternoon in DTLA.

Tips for Visiting The Last Bookstore

  • Parking: Street parking and paid lots are nearby, but it can get busy. Arrive early for the best spots (link opportunity: compact travel umbrella or reusable tote for books).
  • Bag Policy: All bags are inspected at the entrance. Keep things light for easier browsing.
  • Time Needed: Plan at least an hour, more if you want to explore every corner.
  • Nearby Attractions: Pair your visit with the Bradbury Building, Angels Flight Railway, or Grand Central Market.
  • Budget Tip: Entry is free, but chances are you’ll leave with at least one book (or five).

Is It Worth Visiting with Teens?

Absolutely. Between the eclectic shelves, creative art displays, and downtown LA vibe, The Last Bookstore is a hit with teens — even those who aren’t huge readers. It’s an inspiring, affordable way to spend a few hours together and maybe even spark a love for reading.

Hello!

Hey there!
We’re a Filipino family of four figuring things out in California after living in Dubai for years. This space is part blog, part memory box—where we share life lately, parenting wins and fails, travels, and everything in between.

Sometimes it’s deep, sometimes it’s funny, but it’s always honest. Thanks for hanging out with us!

Found this gem while sorting through my phone. Thi Found this gem while sorting through my phone. This was taken a couple of years ago, during the pandemic. I always thought it was funny… but when I showed it to Adam again, he finally told me who he was talking to. 😂

It moved me in a different way this time. Because honestly? We do this a lot. We call on God, and when He answers… we put Him on hold.

But Scripture reminds us:
“Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.” — Jeremiah 29:12

If we call, He answers. The question is—are we ready to listen? And when He calls us, are we willing to pick up?

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me.’” — Isaiah 6:8

Yes, God. Here I am.
