Lost passport in the UAE: Here’s what you have to do

October 31, 2016 by Alvin | AB&Me 53 Comments

As an expat, lost passport is one of the worst things that can happen to us. It may seem that all is lost in the beginning but with this guide on what to do if you lost your passport in UAE, there is actually hope.

lost passport

Tip: Having copies of your documents speed up the process of applying for a new passport. Make sure you have copies of all your important documents.

Steps to follow in case of lost passport in the UAE:

  1. For expats, go to your company HR or PRO to request a letter addressed to Dubai Police explaining you have lost your passport. For tourists, go to your tour organizer or sponsor and request for the letter.
  2. Go to the nearest Police Station with the letter and a copy of your passport and visa.
  3. They will issue a lost-passport letter addressed to Immigration, Dubai Court and Public Prosecution. The letter should be stamped and signed from these three departments.
  4. Go back to the same police station with the signed lost-passport letter, two photographs of yourself and AED 20, which goes towards the police certificate confirming the lost passport. The police counter will issue the certificate.
  5. Visit the Immigration office to get a stamped document that provides status of your residence. You need to pay AED 120 for this.
  6. Contact your Consulate or Embassy with the police report, old passport copy and passport photographs to apply for a new permanent passport.
  7. Once you receive your new passport, you can apply for a new visa.

Lost your passport outside the UAE?

If your passport contains a valid UAE residence visa, following these simple steps will get you on the right track to getting a new passport and new residence visa.

  1. Obtain a police report from the local police station of the country in which you’re in. It should be in English and Arabic and attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that particular country.
  2. Visit your home country’s embassy and take your attested police report, two photographs of yourself, a copy of your passport and visa, to apply for a new passport. If you’ve lost your passport in your home country, visit the Immigration department with the required documents.
  3. Upon receiving your passport, approach the UAE Embassy with a certified police report in Arabic, your new original passport, a colored copy of your old passport and visa, your photograph and a letter of service from your company.
  4. Once you receive your permit to enter the UAE, report to your HR or PRO and advise the airline/travel agency of your new documents.

Note on using eGate:

Expats are not be allowed to enter UAE on any other passport, except their permanent one.  In case of lost passport, it’s against the law to enter the UAE through any other means such as e-gate without following the correct process from the UAE Embassy.  Expats should have the new permanent passport and permit letter from the UAE Embassy

The above instruction is the current known process and subject to change. Please use the comment section to let us know if you are aware of any changes to the above procedures.

You should not attempt to enter the UAE if your passport is missing. You need to report the missing passport in the country where it was actually lost. You would not want your passport to be used by someone else who pretends to be you.

As far as I know you have to follow the same process even if you have an egate card.

    Hi.

I hope u can advise. My passport with valid uae residence was stolen while on vacation in Ukraine, ive done police report. Sad thing is the Phil consul here does not do Passport. They may issue Travel Docs but back to Philippines but I need to go back to UAE as my vacation is over in few days. Any way that UAE Embassy here can help? I havent called them yet as its late now.

The Philippine consulate should do their best get you a passport. They should at least tell you where is the nearest consulate/location where you can obtain one.

Without a valid travel document, the UAE embassy will not be able issue your entry permit.

Been reading this since I have lost my passport abroad while on vacation too and the Philippine Consulate or Embassy on that country issued a travel document..BUT to go back in Philippines and obtain a new passport. I cannot re enter Dubai with a travel document only since I also lost my emirates ID.

After obtaining a new passport in Philippines which takes 15days clearing for lost passport and 10days passport processing,
I went to UAE Embassy Manila to submit documents.

      To make my experience shorter.

I have submitted the following to Uae Embassy Manila :

Police report attested by DFA in philippines (red ribbon)
Affidavit of Loss attested by DFA
      Police report Translated to arabic
      Old Passport Copy
      NEW PASSPORT COPY
      UAE Visa copy(on lost passport)
      Emirates ID Copy
Sponsor letter or company letter stating about you, visa #, and since when you have been employed etc.

The UAE Embassy Manila told me to wait before booking a ticket since processing takes 15days.

They asked me to pay 7,650 pesos for 3 stamps. Each stamp cost 2,550 pesos.

I hope this info helps as of July 2018

That’s not possible. Your passport and you have to be physically present here for your visa to be issued and stamped. That is why you have to get your entry permit from the UAE embassy in Manila.

You only need the entry permit. Once you are in Dubai, you have to get the visa stampped in your new passport.

You have to report to the police with your passport copy. You have to be prepared to deal with the consequence of over staying. Otherwise, just go to your embassy and they can issue a travel document that can be used when you get deported.

Hi Alvin, do you know if someone can apply for a lost passport at the police station and get the letter for stamping at the three offices if he has an existing bank case at the court awaiting hearing next month. Or does he need to finish the case first before he can apply for lost passport?

I’m am not sure about that. If there is a police case, the first thing they do is confiscate the passport to prevent the accused from running. The reason for reporting lost passport becomes suspicious.

Once stamped, the police told me to come back and pay 70 (instead of 20 as ler ur blog so its now increased). So getting the stamos from the 3 locations should be free right?

I think you are refering to an entry permit. If that is the case, you have to get a new passport first then asks the PRO to request DNRD to re-issue the entry permit but with the new passport number if its possible. Otherwise they will have to apply a new one.

        • Baramu Anyijukyire says

          April 5, 2017 at 12:20 PM

          Its not the entry permit.
          Its the visa.
Because after cancelling my previous company , the new company had to make for me a new visa which am waiting today.

If you have completed the medical and UAE ID application, then its visa stamping. If you haven’t yet completed the medical fitness test and UAE ID application the document that will be issued is an entry permit. In both cases you still need to get a new passport first by following the step as mentioned in the article.

Step number 5 of the article “Visit the Immigration office to get a stamped document that provides status of your residence. You need to pay AED 120 for this.” At this point you may have to pay for your overstay penalty.

You still need to follow all the steps stated. Authorities still need to be informed of the lost passport so that it cannot be used by anyone else.

Besides, you still need to get your visa stamped on your new passport.
