Day Trip to Solvang: What to Expect on Your First Visit to This Charming Danish Town in California

August 10, 2025 by Sheila | A B & Me Leave a Comment

We’ve been to Solvang several times, and honestly? I never get tired of it. It’s quaint, charming, and just the right mix of touristy and peaceful. Every time feels like a reset—like I get to slow down for a bit.

Whether it’s your first time or you’re just looking for a low-key day trip, here’s what to know.

Note: Some links on this page are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase—at no extra cost to you. This is how I keep this blog running. Thank you for your support!

Getting to Solvang (and Where to Park)

If you’re driving from the San Fernando Valley, the trip is about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. Once you pass Santa Barbara, the drive becomes relaxing and scenic. I highly recommend leaving early to maximize your time there.

Parking Tips:
There’s free street parking around Mission Drive and the side streets, but it gets busy fast—especially on weekends. There are also public parking lots available behind the main tourist areas. Just follow the signs; it’s very walkable once you’re parked.

What To Do in Solvang

There’s no shortage of things to do, but it’s not overwhelming either. It’s the kind of town where you can wander without a checklist. That said, here are a few must-do’s:

1. Stroll Through the Town

Enjoy the Danish-style architecture, windmills, and cute little courtyards. You’ll find lots of photo-worthy spots and shops with souvenirs, gifts, and Scandinavian decor.

Hamlet Square

2. Grab a Danish Pastry (Or Several)

You can’t leave Solvang without stopping by Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery, Mortensen’s, or Birkholm’s Bakery. Try a Danish kringle, aebleskiver, or their buttery shortbread cookies. Trust me—grab extras for the drive home.

Tip: Pack a cooler tote if you’re planning to bring pastries or perishable goodies back with you.

3. Visit the Elverhøj Museum

If you’re into history and culture, this small museum tells the story of Solvang’s Danish roots. It’s free (donations welcome), and quick enough to hold the kids’ attention too.

4. Go Wine (or Olive Oil) Tasting

Solvang is part of Santa Ynez Valley, which is wine country. You’ll find tasting rooms like Lucas & Lewellen, Casa Cassara, and Sanger Wines right in town. Not into wine? Try an olive oil tasting at Solvang Olive Press.

If you’re buying bottles to take home, bring a wine bottle travel bag to protect them.

Family-Friendly Fun

  • Check out the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, tucked above the Book Loft bookstore.
  • Feed the animals at Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch just outside Solvang.
  • Stop by the Solvang Park if you have little kids who need to run around.

Where to Eat

Aside from pastries, you’ll find plenty of options for meals:

  • Solvang Restaurant (famous for aebleskiver)
  • Paula’s Pancake House
  • Succulent Cafe for a casual brunch
  • Copenhagen Sausage Garden if you’re into sausage, pretzels, and outdoor seating

Bring a refillable water bottle and comfy walking shoes—you’ll be on your feet most of the day!

Bonus Stops Nearby

If you’re up for it, make your day trip a loop with these nearby stops:

  • Los Olivos – for even more wine and a small-town vibe
  • Chumash Casino – if you’re feeling lucky
  • Mission Santa Inés – a beautiful and quiet historical mission just a few blocks from downtown

Final Thoughts

Solvang is one of those places you can visit again and again. It’s easy, relaxing, and full of charm. Whether you’re going with family, friends, or solo, you’ll find something that makes the trip worth it.

If you’ve been to Solvang recently, what’s your favorite shop or stop? Leave a comment—I’d love to add it to my list for the next visit.

Sometimes the best memories aren’t from big adventures but from the simple moments—like game night in a cozy cabin, laughing until our stomachs hurt. We booked our Big Bear stay through @airbnb and @avantstay gave us the perfect backdrop for a weekend full of fun, comfort, and family time. Definitely one for the books.
