It started as a random weekend plan when my cousin casually said, “Let’s go to the beach.” I didn’t realize she meant Newport Beach, which is a bit of a drive from where I live—but honestly, I’m so glad we went. The place was stunning. The air had that crisp ocean scent, the kind that instantly relaxes you. Newport Beach has that classic Southern California charm—clean, wide shores, sailboats gliding in the distance, and rows of beach houses that look straight out of a movie. The whole area feels very nautical, effortlessly mixing that coastal luxury vibe with laid-back beach life.

Where We Ate: Ruby’s Diner at Newport Pier
After finding parking near the pier, we decided to walk over to Ruby’s Diner, a nostalgic 1940s-style diner that’s perched right at the end of the Newport Pier. If you’ve never been, it’s worth the walk—especially for the views. You can sit by the window and watch surfers catching waves below while you enjoy a milkshake or their famous burgers. Fun fact: Ruby’s started here in Orange County in the early ’80s and has become somewhat of a Southern California classic. There’s something about sitting there with the ocean breeze and seagulls in the background that makes you feel like you’re on a mini vacation.

Beach Vibes
After lunch, we laid out our blanket on the sand and just soaked it all in. Families were building sandcastles, couples were biking along the boardwalk, and the sound of the waves made it impossible not to relax. We walked along the shore for a while, watching the surfers and the boats heading in and out of the harbor. It was one of those easy, unplanned days that somehow end up being exactly what you needed.
Things to Do in Newport Beach
If you’re planning a visit, Newport Beach is perfect for a quick coastal getaway. You can explore Balboa Island, take the ferry to the Fun Zone, or rent a Duffy boat to cruise around the harbor—these make for fun family or date activities. For something a little more active, try paddle boarding or surf lessons (There are great local tours and rentals you can book ahead). If you’re staying overnight, consider cozy boutique hotels near the pier or beach cottages around Balboa Island — usually within walking distance to restaurants and shops.

And of course, don’t leave without catching the sunset. The sky turns into this incredible mix of pink and orange, and for a few minutes, everyone just stops to watch. Newport Beach might have been an unplanned trip, but it turned out to be one of my favorite beach days so far.
