Ojai Day Trip: Our Spontaneous Mother’s Day Adventure
For Mother’s Day 2023, we wanted something low-key but special. No intense itinerary, no long drives—just a chance to spend time together somewhere new. That’s how we ended up doing a quick day trip to Ojai with my mom, cousins, and aunts.
None of us had been before, so I turned to Instagram and Google for ideas. We left early in the morning and drove straight to our first stop: Ojai Olive Oil Company.
First Stop: Nature, Creek & (Oops) Private Property
Just before reaching the farm, we saw a quiet little clearing with a creek. We were so excited to be surrounded by trees and nature that we got out and explored for a bit.

Heads up though—this area is private property. A local woman (not thrilled to see us there) came out to tell us to leave and mentioned there were security cameras. Apparently, this happens often, so it’s good to know not to linger in that spot.
Olive Oil Tasting at Ojai Olive Oil Company
We parked just outside the entrance of Ojai Olive Oil Company, where there were picnic tables and swings perfect for hanging out while waiting for the rest of our group.

When everyone arrived, we headed inside and found a big table where we could all sit. The tasting room offers a fun and flavorful experience—sampling various olive oils and balsamic vinegars with fresh bread. My mom was in heaven.

The family running the farm was so friendly and even shared a few fun olive oil facts while we tasted. We ended up buying five different bottles of olive oil and vinegar just for my mom!
Directions: How to Get to Ojai Olive Oil Company
This part can get a bit tricky, so here’s a quick guide based on their website:
- After turning onto Ladera Road from Thatcher Road, stay to the left at the first fork (it’ll look like you’re heading onto Hermitage Road—that’s correct).
- At the second fork, bear left again, leaving Hermitage Road and rejoining Ladera.
- After crossing a creek, you’ll enter a small valley surrounded by olive trees.
- Watch for the Ojai Olive Oil sign, then park in the designated areas.
- Walk toward the green buildings to find the Tasting Room near the barn and milling area.

Late Lunch + Downtown Ojai Stroll
After our olive oil tasting, we headed to downtown Ojai for a late lunch. The town is full of charm with boutique stores, antique shops, cafes, and restaurants. It has that small-town feel, but there’s plenty to see and do.

We didn’t have time to visit everything, but next time I want to check out Bart’s Books (an outdoor bookstore!) and explore more of the town’s hidden gems.
Final Thoughts
Ojai was the perfect easy getaway. Close enough to the Valley for a day trip, peaceful enough to feel like a true escape. If you’re planning a visit, bring comfy shoes, a big appetite, and an empty trunk—you’ll probably go home with more olive oil than you expected!
